What is the function of Intervention and Referral Service?

Intervention and Referral Service, otherwise known as I&RS consists of a team of school professionals that help students successfully access the curriculum where there might be concerns in regards to learning, behavior or health needs. The I&RS teams meet biweekly throughout the school year to discuss students in need of assistance. Classroom teachers first need to identify the problem/concern that is affecting the student. Next, the classroom teacher collects concrete data that is presented and discussed at the meeting. During the meeting, the team and classroom teacher problem solve and collaborate on strategies and interventions that can help aid the student. Parents are also actively involved in the I&RS process. They are given a parent questionnaire to fill out which is discussed at the meeting. Action plans are developed and implemented based on this meeting and parents are called by the classroom teacher to discuss the next steps. Action plans are followed up on and reviewed to measure success 6-8 weeks after plan is implemented.
